Tai Chi Chuan can be viewed as a synthesis of martial art, health method and spiritual path. Its roots lie in Taoist philosophy and the ancient martial practice of the monks of the Shaolin Temple. Though to many Tai Chi Chuan may appear to be simply a form of gentle gymnastics, it cannot be judged by its appearance. In reality, its internal martial aspects can only be revealed through the practise of each posture and its application for self-defence purposes. However, Tai Chi Chuan is also a therapeutic method based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine.

Through the pursuit of correct posture and movement and proper breathing, one can re-establish a harmonious flow of energy throughout the body, which aids in dissolving blockages that are often at the root of many ailments. In addition, Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan is also a system of meditation aimed at harmonising the body, mind, and spirit.
